|Cape Sable canal assessment gets funding|

MIAMI — The Everglades Foundation is contributing $143,000 toward the first phase of plugging four small canals that experts say are exacerbating Cape Sable’s vulnerability to rising sea levels.
Everglades National Park spent $7 million plugging two other canals in 2011.
The funding from the Everglades Foundation is half the cost of an environmental assessment required before officials can seek an estimated $10 million to complete the work on the four canals.
