South Woods Elementary School fifth-graders Mackenzie Cervantes and Kaylee Smith ride the carousel in Davenport Park in St. Augustine on Tuesday. The ride was part of a day of reward for top scorers in the Accelerated Reader program at the Hastings-area school. Some 75 students in grades first through fifth got to enjoy lunch at Outback Steakhouse, dessert at Cortesse's Bistro and a ride on the carousel. Teacher Susan Joyner praised the businesses for supporting the schools. 'These partners in education were so great. It was a blast, and it was so much fun (for the kids),' she said. It was the third year Outback manager Doug Willis has taken part in the reward program and the first year for Cortesse's owner Michael Smyth. Children earn the celebration by reading books and then passing comprehension tests on the books used in the reading intervention program.
