News - St Augustine Area & St Johns County
Two sandhill cranes search for food near Palatka over the weekend. Some subspecies of sandhill crane are listed as endangered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Two subspecies are found in Florida: the Florida sandhill crane, which lives here year-round, and the greater sandhill crane, which winters here from the Great Lakes region. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the two are indistinguishable as both have gray plumage and a bald red crown.
