For those of you who don't read the various wire reports as they roll in, you might not realize how quickly the opinions pour in. But by the time Saturday's Preakness was two hours past its finish, I was seeing columns about how racing is being hurt by not having a Triple Crown winner. It's so predictable. Horse racing has been hurt by many things, the least of which is the lack of a Triple Crown horse. The real culprit is competition. Thirty years ago, NBA arenas held 15,000 fans and didn't have luxury boxes, and Yankee Stadium was just a big old ballpark. Heck, more than a dozen major sports franchises had yet to be born. Racing will never return to the days of Seabiscuit, but if you can still get 100,000 people out to big races, I'd say the sport can survive. Stuart Korfhage
